Oral Health Promotion for Migrant Population
Over a quarter of Australia’s population was born overseas. This proportion – 25%, or 5.5 million people – is the highest recorded since Federation. (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006 census and updated ABS data from June 2009.) As at 30 June 2008, Australia’s population was 21,734,000. Overseas-born population who were from non-English speaking countries (NESC) totalled to 2,740,409 which was about 12.7% of Australia's total population. Lack of English language may mean these overseas born population do not know how or may have not been able to access appropriate dental services. A lack of fluoride may also have contributed to higher rates of dental decay.
