Oral Health Promotion for The Aged
Home bound people, those in residential care including those with physical or mental disabilities and those in nursing homes need reinforced oral care and advice. Many older people may have lessened manual dexterity due to existing arthritis. They may also have reduced system functions due to co-existing diseases like Parkinson's disease or strokes.
Older populations who are in several medications may be suffering from mouth dryness. This makes them at high risk of dental decays and other severe oral diseases. Individual carers and nursing and auxilliary staff of aged care and nursing homes may not be well informed of the importance of Oral Health Care. Others may have been overworked or understaff. Participation of families and relatives of the elderly are encouraged to maintain good oral hygiene.
Jinky Marsh, in line with Department of Health and Ageing's "The Better Oral Health in Residential Care training project" being rolled out nationally to all residential aged care facilities in 2010, is committed to providing an increased awareness of oral hygiene issues for the staff in daily contact with residents. Apart from incorporating oral health promotion in her entertainment sessions, Jinky is available for implementation of oral health education program in various Aged Care facilities. Jinky will be pleased to meet and interact with you. She is experienced in directly relating with the elderly being a personal care worker in an aged care facility since 2007.
